Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. Originally named Siddhartha, he was the son of King Suddhodana of the Shakya clan in Kapilavastu, ancient India. Witnessing the numerous sufferings such as birth, old age, sickness and death in the human world, he resolutely abandoned his royal life to seek liberation. After years of ascetic practice and meditation, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Thereafter, he began to spread Buddhist teachings, with the core ideas including the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. He advocated that one could achieve liberation from the cycle of rebirth and reach nirvana through cultivation, having a profound impact on Asian and even world cultures.
